A bettor made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of the Venezuelan leader just before it was made public, sparking debate about whether someone profited from inside knowledge of American actions.

Market Movement in Predictions

Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office by the month's conclusion surged in the hours before former President Trump stated on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.

A single trader, which joined the platform in December and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a initial bet of over $32,000.

It remains unclear. The user had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Market Signals Before Announcement

Trading information shows that participants assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

But these probabilities had climbed to 11% by late Friday night and skyrocketed in the first hours of Saturday, suggesting a sharp shift in betting activity right before the official statement was made.

"This specific wager has all the characteristics of a trade based on non-public details," said Dennis Kelleher.

A handful of other individuals also made tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.

Regulatory Scrutiny Grows

Politicians are growing concerned.

A bill introduced on the start of the week would prevent public officials from making trades on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a market.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Event-driven betting sites have surged in popularity in recent years, with participants able to predict everything from sports to current affairs.

This sector were examined under the Biden administration. But it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.

Trading on insider information is a crime in the traditional financial markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the event betting arena.

A company executive for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
